More footage has surfaced from Freestyle Fellowship‘s
recent show at Yoshi‘s in SF, with the crew displaying
more from their endless cache of styles. Their new
single “On This Earth” is out now on iTunes.
The mighty Freestyle Fellowship rocked Yoshi’s SF
last Saturday and here’s a clip of them performing
“Pure Thought” from their classic Innercity Groits
album. Decon is dropping their new single,
“On This Earth”, on August 17 & their full-
length The Promise is set to follow.
In case you haven’t heard, Freestyle Fellowship have reunited.
The fearsome foursome stopped by the KPLtv Rec Room to
get open on the mics & serve notice to the MC community
at large – the bullies of the block are back.
Here is a one shot uncut video shot at the Project Blowed
15 Year Anniversary by Swim Team MC Dumbfounded.
Many of LA hip-hop’s best and brightest were in attendance.
in order:
Open Mike Eagle, Aspect 1, 2mex, Exile, L. Scatterbrain, Tone3, Gajah of Acid Reign, DJ Icewater, Shing02, Verbs, General Black, Pigeon John, Xololanxinco (OMD), Existereo (Shapeshifters), Rifleman Ellay Khule, Medusa, Hines Buchanan, Otherwize, P.E.A.C.E.,
(Freestyle Fellowship), Myka9 (Freestyle Fellowship), Aceyalone (Freestyle Fellowship), Kenny Segal, Bboy Fresh (LA Breakers)
Here’s some vintage footage of Project Blowed veterans P.E.A.C.E. & J-Smoov expertly styling free. While I’m not
sure exactly what year this was recorded, it looks
like it’s from the late ’90s. Enjoy.
Hip-hop fans far and wide know and remember the tried and true tradition of the posse cut.
What is the posse cut?
The posse cut is the song on the album when the featured artist’s friends show up and they destroy the mic for fun’s sake. Classic in this tradition: Marley Marl and the Juice Crew “The Symphony”, Tribe Called Quest “Scenario”, The D.O.C. and N.W.A. “The Grand Finale”, Main Source “Live at the Barbecue”, KRS/BDP “Self-Destruction”, De La Soul “Buddy” Remix, EPMD “Headbanger”.
These are among the most commonly referred to milestones of the phenomenon, so in pure Culture King fashion I’m gonna highlight some of the less discussed posse cuts that were many times just as dope as the more celebrated ones. So, 1, 2, 3, and here we go:
Aceyalone and company get on some A-Team, save-hip-hop storytelling, which dates the song a bit. But hey, when you got P.E.A.C.E.’s incredibly descriptive ending shot and Myka’s battle cry hook, it’s a win from all angles. What always got me was how P.E.A.C.E.’s deliberate and detailed rhythmic pace matches the calculated moves his character makes in his verse. Impeccable.
A new one in the bunch, this is from Opio’s amazing new album, Vulture’s Wisdom. The album is top to bottom gifts for the hip-hop listener and after 14 tracks of fury, Op has the nerve to end it with this remix. Del smashes this one, while Guilty gets a bit lost, then brings it together by the end. Whatever, the joint bangs.
Ha hah! No one EVER talks about this one! From the crazy mumbled beginning to the Betty Davis voice chops, to early Phat Kat gruffness to Baatin’s recipe for fun (lol) – CLASSIC! Fruit Mentos! lol, yeah! “The good ole boys, flat out, we number uno..”. What always impressed me was this comes pretty early in the tracklisting for a posse cut. Dope, dope.
So there it is. Feel like I missed something? Tell me. Peace.

My name is Moonsatellite.
I am an engineer and a producer.
I am a student of the principles of sound.
As an engineer, I’ve studied under professionals who have worked with Bernard Purdie, Whitney Houston, De La Soul, Lauryn Hill, Aerosmith and John Lennon, to name a few.
Moon rocks Logic Pro + a Steinway
As a producer, I’ve supplied beats for the likes of LA hip-hoppers BLX (Omni, Malkovich Music), South Bend IN/ATL mc Jae Ellis (affiliate of Freeway), LA/ATL indie hip-hop crew The VJC and ATL hip-hop luminaries Prophetix.
Moon rocks the San Francisco Apple Store
In my stint as an mc and recording artist, I rocked stages with GZA/Genius (Wu-Tang Clan), Fatlip (Pharcyde), MF DOOM (his 1st ATL show EVER), the late, great phenom Camu Tao, Myka 9 & P.E.A.C.E. (Freestyle Fellowship), and Immortal Technique.
I release free mixtapes and projects whenever I get the feeling. Those who have Facechanger and Happy Holy Days know what I am talking about. In fact, if you picked up DJ A to the L‘s mixtape Spam Filters, which was hosted by Count Bass D, then you heard my track “Marvin“.
Culture King is my blog home. This is the place to find anything involving Moonsatellite. Music releases, free and otherwise, will be available here. Up next is a four-part podcast series entitled MSK Radio. Tune in and I’ll tell you what M.S.K. stands for.
This is also where I’ll let my mind float, so if you wanna analyze the world with me then let’s blast off. My myspace is still fully operative, so I can be reached there too.
Feel free to introduce yourself in the comments. Any and all participation is greatly appreciated.
Peace, ’bout to get back on these beats.
Mattafak, here’s another joint for good measure: “Dogg Pound Remix”
