Last night I listened to Apollo Brown‘s new LP Clouds on
my phone while playing Pac-Man. This is my review.
At the onset, Clouds pulls you in with “Sound Of Guns”, prepping the listener
for an “experience”. The music of “Sound Of..” is moving enough, but the
lyrics are truly mind-blowing. Not since Outkast‘s “You May Die” has
an intro been so sad and hopeful at once. Before you know it,
you’re whisked away into the clouds. And that’s the thing
about this album. It works its vibe at a confident
pace & by the time Track 9 (“Push”) arrives,
the listener is fully immersed.
At times the mood is foreboding, other times nocturnal, & other times
menacing. Pretty much every tone suggested by the title Clouds is
present here. A lot of instrumental releases come off like archive
songs that producers remove the vocals from and *voila*: new
album. Clouds is easily not the case. It is one of those rare
things nowadays: a truly complete instrumental effort.
Pick this one up, press play and zone out.
Apollo Brown “Clouds” is available March 1 via Mello Music Group.
