I just pulled Raphael Saadiq’s solo debut Instant Vintage back out and I must say that this album is still a beast! Underrated and slept-on, it’s still as banging as when it came out. The closing song, “Skyy, Can You Feel Me”, is a sweeping three-part opus that escorts you out of the full album listening experience with a thrill. The third part in particular always struck me as a favorite, but I have to admit that I didn’t totally comprehend it when it first came out.
Since then I’ve studied a lot of Sly and The Family Stone‘s material, so coming back to this song causes me to realize: this is Raphael’s Sly Stone tribute-style blowout. From the strutting bassline to the murky vocals to the jazzy-churchy organ, it just screams with Sly’s style. What I love about it is it’s not a bite. This song is a truly modern interpretation and is one of the funkiest things I’ve ever heard. I advise those who haven’t heard Instant Vintage yet to get a hold of it. You won’t be disappointed.

I wish I could be in the A for this event so if you are in the city, attendance is mandatory. The Earl is the place, and it falls on Jax‘s birthday AND Binkis‘s 10th Anniversary. This is definitely gonna be one for the books. The show is preceded by the premier of a documentary called “Jax Forever”, so get there early.
